Scenes from Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “Satansbraten” [1976 West Germany]

I’ve just started getting acquainted with the works of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, one of the more important directors who shaped and nurtured what is called the “Neuer Deutscher Film” aka New German Cinema. He also scripted, edited and acted in films, occasionally also wearing additional caps as cameraman and composer. The man knows a bit about film all right, even though his background is from theatre. He was apparently also a hell-raiser, and courted controversy throughout his career and personal life. Since I don’t know much of his filmography, I’ll start with the first film I managed to add to my DVD library, the 1976 black comedy “Satansbraten” [Eng. Title: Satan’s Brew].

Walter is a writer going through a mental block, and desperately needs cash to get by with his ailing wife Luise and mentally challenged brother Ernst (he’s obsessed with dead flies and wants to find a way to fuck them – you get the idea!). Walter’s publisher has refused further payments until he’s seen the first few lines from his proposed work. The film is mostly about Walter going to extraordinary lengths to find money, by any means possible. The film is shot at a frenetic pace like a slapstick comedy, but most of it isn’t funny at all, but biting satire. There are traces of Godard and Fellini in the way the characters have been drawn. It is actually a very interesting film, but I hope to discover more of Fassbinder over the coming months. Highly Recommended Viewing..!

Mónica del Carmen in “Año Bisiesto” [2010 Mexico]

Australian-born Michael Rowe made his directorial debut in this 2010 Mexican drama “Año Bisiesto” [Eng. Title: Leap Year]. I wanted to see this during one of its screenings in the UK, but work kept me away and had to wait for the DVD to be out.

It’s a sad but beautiful film dealing with complex issues like loneliness, particularly urban solitude, marginalisation within ‘mainstream society’ due to gender or ethnicity, and also a thirst for love. And what better setting than the biggest urban zone of all, with deeply set divisions within – Mexico city. The director had lived in Mexico for several years and has used his intimate knowledge of the city and its culture to tell us the story of Laura, a Mexican native American.

A migrant from the provinces, Laura makes a living as a freelance journalist. She lives alone and is on the verge of depression. In her desperate search for intimacy and companionship, she has meaningless sexual encounters with various men. Her loneliness is exemplified through the vicarious pleasure she takes in watching a young couple living opposite displaying affection for one another. She craves for a similar affection, having never before experienced it herself. Every time her mum or friends call, she lies to them by portraying herself as living a far more interesting life than she thinks she is.

When Laura reaches a point where she wants to end it all, she set herself a date to end her existence – February the 29th – the same day her father died four years earlier. It’s not coincidental that the date of this post would have also been February the 29th, had it been a leap year.

Laura meets Arturo. During their first night, they somehow ‘connect’, and for a change, they meet again. Arturo thinks he’d finally found someone upon whom he can act out his sexual fetishes, whereas Laura endures the abuse willingly in order to experience the intimacy that their sex sessions bring. The long post-coital scenes on the couch are just as important as the sex, as this is when they really get to know each other. However, the intensity of their sadomasochistic acts increase with each sex session, until her deadline of 29th of February begins to loom in front of her, and Arturo is tasked to help in her mission…

Apart from two scenes in a supermarket, the entire film is shot from inside a small flat. Laura’s. The air of claustrophobia is adequately illustrated using simple but effective directorial and cinematographic techniques. The acting from both the lead characters is sincere and intense, especially Laura, played by Mónica del Carmen, and the storytelling is quite captivating. This film was made on a shoestring budget, but put together well with care and devotion, a feat appreciated at Cannes last year when it deservedly won the Camera d’Or.

Now that the DVD is out – there’s no reason not to buy it, not only for the fine film but also the interesting points Director Rowe raises in his interview. Please treat these scenes below as a sampler – if you like them, buy the film. Highly Recommend Viewing..!

Scene 1:
Laura brings a guy after an evening out. No sooner does he catch his breath after sex, the guy’s asking for his pants to go home to his wife…

Scene 2:
When Laura brings home Arturo for the first time, a bond spontaneously develops between the two – it’s as if he knew what she wanted, and was only too happy to give. The sex scenes are nevertheless not really erotic and there is sadness displayed in Laura’s emotions even through her orgasms.

Scene 3:
The infliction of pain during sex appears to have a cathartic effect on Laura, and the sado-masochistic element of their sex sessions intensify. The post-coital scene is however moving, when Arturo asks Laura to tell something she had never told anyone before.

Scene 4:
Laura welcomes him in the nude as usual, but Arturo asks her to clear the room, slaps and ‘forces’ her to masturbate while urinating all over her. When he asks her later how it felt to be pissed on, she smiles and says, “it felt warm” – the warm feeling in sharing an unmentionable secret with Arturo, something very personal that they could tell no one. During their next session, Arturo burns her with a cigarette, Laura by now is ready to take anything, whenever the doorbell rings. In the last part of the compilation, she turns down new work opportunity from a publisher, lying to him that she’s emigrating to Switzerland to work at the embassy there.

Scene 5:
Laura welcomes Arturo holding a kitchen knife – she wants him to cut her. He hesitates. During their customary chat, she masturbates him while describing how it would feel to actually mutilate her while making love. She suggests he could if he wants even come inside her dead body after slitting her throat. The scene is explicit, but is not a all designed to titillate, unless you are one of those who need help. I have also appended an unrelated shower scene towards the end.

Louise Bourgoin in “Blanc comme Neige” BR720 [2010 Belgium, France]

Christophe Blanc’s latest film is a thriller (or should I say a comedy thriller) called “Blanc comme Neige” [Eng. Title: White Snow] with some high expectations. The film does start off nicely, but looses its way half way through. Some of the scenes are not believable at all – the plot is there, but the screenplay lets it down.
Maxine is a luxury car dealer living a contended life – a successful business, beautiful wife Michèle, loving daughter, neat little villa, and of course his sparkling new beemer. When he discovers the reason why his partner got murdered, he’s shocked to know that his partner had been selling defective cars to the Finnish Mafia, and when they ask for a refund, he tells them that he doesn’t have the money any more.
Now they’re pursuing Maxine for that money. He asks his brothers to help get rid of the gang, but things get ridiculously complicated further.

There are two brief nude appearances in the film, first when Michèle slides off into the pool, naked, and later when Maxine has a bad dream concerning his wife at office. I’ve added a few extra seconds before and after to allow people to follow the scene. Michèle is played by the absolutely gorgeous Louise Bourgoin.

Elvira Mínguez in “Tapas” [2005 Spain]

José Corbacho & Juan Cruz’s debut feature in 2005, “Tapas” is a typical example of what makes European films so magical. The gentle comedy drama is a beautiful and intimate portrait of people living in a neighbourhood of Barcelona – the part of town tourists usually don’t get to see. It observes the lives of a grocer, a supermarket assistant, a tapas bar owner and an elderly couple, conjuring up a nostalgic view of the town’s quarter where one of the film’s directors grew up. The film deservedly won several awards including a Goya for Best New Director the following year. There is only brief nudity in a couple of scenes, but I so liked the film that this post is actually more of an excuse for writing something about it. Needless to say – Recommended Viewing.

Raquel has been separated for two years, and now has an online relationship with an Argentinian man she’s not yet met. Sexual frustration initially draws her to one of her regular customer’s son, but it develops into something more deep. The first few scenes are about Raquel, played by Elvira Mínguez. Even though there’s very little nudity, the initial kissing scene is erotic where you have a young lad making out with a woman old enough to be his mother. The final scene is of the tapas bar owner having sex with his regular prostitute and confidante Carmela, played by Rosario Pardo. This is a gently funny scene where the guy asks her to recite player names of his favourite football team from 15 years ago. She tells him afterwards that it’s his weird fantasies and behaviour that would have driven his wife away – the wife had left him unannounced at the beginning of the film. And I loved that accent of hers too!

Verónica Echegui & co in “Yo Soy la Juani” [2006 Spain]

Continuing the filmography of Bigas Luna, this is his 2006 feature “Yo Soy la Juani” [Eng. Title: My Name is Juani], a story of a small-town belle going to big city with dreams of becoming an actress. His latest film “Di Di Hollywood” also works on the same theme. I was going to post his latest film first, but thought this would be a better introduction to his recent obsession with aspiring starlets. But I feel both these are some of his least original film themes. While his palette and technique has become impressive these days, the films lack the edginess of his early years – many of which remain true classics of European cinema. In this film, apart from the titles and technical aspects, this is an ordinary film.

Juani, a savvy hip-hop and fast car loving shop assistant, dreams of becoming a successful actress – her dreams extending all the way to Hollywood. She’s also madly in love with Jonah, a local garage attendant. However, when she catches him with another girl in his garage, Juani’s had enough and uses the breakup as an excuse to start a new life in Madrid. She also drags along her best friend Vanessa, low in confidence owing to her modest breast size. The rest of the film follows their successes and failures in their respective quest. Juani particularly finds things more difficult. She almost gives up, until her mother’s support and encouragement make her more determined to succeed. Juani is played by Verónica Echegui, and Vanessa by Laya Martí.

Verónica Echegui, Joana López & Laya Martí show their physical assets in "Yo Soy la Juani"

I’ve used the best bits from the film to make this compilation:
Scene 1: At the beginning, Juani quickly changes into into her street gear after leaving work.
Scene 2: Juani fooling around with her boyfriend Jonah in the cinema.
Scene 3: When Juani mentions her intention to go to Madrid, Jonah orders her not to go, she asks him to fuck off and leaves. He follows her begging for forgiveness. She tells him to stop sucking-up and eat her pussy instead, and they have sex in the car, composited with some go-karting scenes.
Scene 4: Juani catches Jonah redhanded with her bitter rival Nadia, played by Joana López, and walks off in a rage.
Scene 5: Vanessa gets her breasts examined by a surgeon while Juani attends auditions (split screen).
Scene 6: Juani comforts Vanessa before surgery and waits for it to finish.
Scene 7: A brief sexy dance between the girls at a party.
