Giovanna Zacarías in “Rabioso Sol, Rabioso Cielo” [2009 Mexico]

Julián Hernández is a fine young director from Mexico, most of his films relating to gay-themed relationships. His 2009 film, “Rabioso Sol, Rabioso Cielo” [Eng. Title: Raging Sun, Raging Sky] is for the most part in black and white, and colour is gradually added to the film as the protagonists’ love for each other matures. It is excellently done and I can see the director had sought inspiration from some classic filmmakers – not the technique but the style, notably Pier Paolo Pasolini (Edipo Re), Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point), perhaps even Godard (2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle), but certainly Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo). Some passages in the film are however challenging for those uneasy with frank depiction of gay sexuality. But this is a very good film, beautifully done nevertheless. Recommended Viewing!

The only heterosexual scene in the film happens at the very beginning, when Tatei meets up with her boyfriend and has passionate sex. It is exquisitely shot – and the characters portray true affection for one another. Tatei is played by the lovely Giovanna Zacarías.
