Detlev Buck’s “Die Vermessung der Welt” [Eng. Title: Measuring the World], is adapted from Daniel Kehlmann’s novel by the same name – a fictional recreation of two of Germany’s most eminent scientists, explorer and botanist Alexander von Humboldt, and mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.
We follow Carl (Florian David Fitz) and Alexander (Albrecht Schuch) separately from their childhood days – their contrasting backgrounds, careers, and personal lives. Both child prodigies, Alexander is from a wealthy family spending his time in scientific explorations around the globe, while Carl’s parents are from the working class – he has rich benefactors however, but rarely leaves town. Much of the film focuses on a particular time in their lives, when Alexander was exploring the jungles of South America with fellow French botanist and assistant Aimé Bonpland (Jérémy Kapone), and Carl publishing his first discoveries, and his marriage to Johanna (Vicky Krieps) until her early death.
Not having heard of the director or the film, I wasn’t expecting too much from it, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of its production. Detlev Buck, his crew, and cast, have put together a well-made film that’s entertaining, and whether or not the events depicted are accurate, it looks and sound credible. It even has a sense of humour, despite also touching upon some hellish aspects of the late eighteenth century like slavery. Recommended Viewing..!
The Nudity: Anastasiia Kyryliuk, Tatiana Merizalde Dobles, Florian David Fitz, Vicky Krieps, and others
The film features nudity from credited cast on at least three occasions. The first is of benevolent prostitute Nina, played by Anastasiia Kyryliuk, extending credit to a young Carl. The second scene is from Tatiana Merizalde Dobles, who plays an innocent and eager-to-please native American girl. Aimé befriends her, much to the moralist Alexander’s chagrin. The final scene is of Carl (Florian David Fitz) and newly wed wife Johanna (Vicky Krieps) enjoying conjugal bliss.

Trivia:
Tatiana Merizalde Dobles was also the second unit director for the film – one of the more appealing second unit directors to have around, I’m sure. 🙂
