Bursting with borrowed cliché – “Combustión” [2013 Spain]

The Spaniards are obviously entitled to their fair share of cars-and-chick flicks, and even if they’re a bit late off the block on this, Daniel Calparsoro has nevertheless made sure that his action drama “Combustión” [Eng. Title: Combustion] is imbued with a sexiness that’s uniquely Spanish, in which the sparkling Adriana Ugarte will be the catalyst who’ll flag things off for hunks Álex González and Alberto Ammann, in more ways than one of course, on a track paved with frenzied cliché and disbelief.

My tiresome attempt at pun is actually an after-effect of watching the film, while my initial reaction was somewhat similar to witnessing a beautiful woman nonchalantly break wind while passing by. Oh – never mind me love, or logic even, plot-wise that is! 😀

Navas (Alberto Ammann) and Ari (Adriana Ugarte) are lovers, who also love high-performance cars and illegal road racing. They fund their passion through petty crime and below-average scruples. Ari will be the honeytrap to lure gullible rich men and lower their guard, while Navas and his friend surprise them at an opportune moment and clear the victim of his valuables. It doesn’t go according to plan when they try the scheme on Mikel (Álex González), who works for, and is engaged to Julia (María Castro), heiress to a prominent jeweller. But Mikel was also once a racing driver and still loves it, which Navas wants to exploit for his own gain. Mikel also falls in love with Ari and breaks up with Julia, even if Ari likes to keep her options open. Things will get more complicated when an Argentinian offers a one-on-one race with Navas, for a high stake…

The film may be intended for a specific audience, but I’m aware that many among us might yet watch it in secret and pretend otherwise (too late for me, I know), if only for one Adriana Ugrate – delectable, whether in or out of her blonde wig, or robes. I’m delighted that she’d managed to clear the odd bad film off her system with this, so we can now look forward to seeing more of the talented actress that she undeniably is.

The Nudity: Adriana Ugarte and Álex González
Thanks to a generously long make-out scene (because part of it is in slow-motion), we get to see beautiful Adriana Ugarte as nature intended, and Álex González – who might vaguely resemble Tim Henman if the latter ever decided to do body enhancing drugs.

Bonus Clip: (yeah..!)
I couldn’t help messing with a scene from the film that’s a Spanish equivalent of ‘Cheese’. There’s no nudity, but it’s accompanied by an outrageous electronic soundtrack that must’ve played in numerous tacky clubs along the Costa del Sol. I’ve realigned the track to make the clip look even more exquisitely cheesy – what the heck, I’ve had a great day today and it is weekend..! 😉
